Cafe Rua. Mention the name in Castlebar and you won't find one discerning eater that doesn't know it. Well that's what we found, when we asked for directions. In fact the lady that gave us the directions had just been there for lunch and was only too full of praise. This place is about all the good things Irish food has to offer, dressed up in a bright colourful space with staff who smile, clearly enjoy what they do and know the difference between one end of a carrot and another. Well more than carrot's, actually.

We like Cafe Rua for its comfortable interior - good communal tables, fresh seasonal flowers and herbs, lamplights, papers to read. Here is a place you just enjoy sitting in. Customers are clearly a focus, which is why so many of them become regulars, just like the lady we met. They come for the enthusiastic service and of course, the food. Blackboards around the room are segmented by use; so paninis on one, lighter meals on another, one for daily specials - which are just that - and another for puds. Good prices mean value for money eating. The Mayo Tasting plate provides a filling lunch - featuring the products of the region of which the proprietors are so proud. Everything here is homemade in house daily, with a menu that serves all palates. Home baking is second to none.

Café Rua has buckets of attitude in all the right places and in all the right ways. Go there and find it for yourself, or ask a local. They're bound to know!
