Abstract

In her best-known and most popular ballad, Droste-Huelshoff uses a floating narratorial voice to manipulate the reader's response towards an awareness of socialised projections about nature and childhood, identifying the ballad not as a conventional Realist work but one which incorporates merges psychological Realism with Romanticism.
