Biophotonics involves the application of spectroscopic and biophotonic measurements, such as: Fluorescence spectroscopy Cytometer measurements Circular dichroism spectroscopy UV-vis spectrophotometry Raman spectroscopy FTIR spectroscopy NMR spectroscopy for the purposes of understanding and modelling biological systems at the biochemical level in sera, cells and tissues. See Resources for further information on equipment.

Biophotonics and Imaging is a multidisciplinary collaboration between members of groups housed within the Focas Research Institute (MSA, NanoLab and RESC), and personnel in the School of Biological Sciences. The successes of the group at present have been the development of Raman and infrared spectroscopies for the analysis of pathological changes in cervical cancer tissue and the modelling of radiobiological effects in biological systems
