Ellen Breen is the Head of Information and Public Services in DCU Library a post she has held since 2001. She is also Chair of the CONUL Advisory Committee on Information Literacy and a member of the Executive of the All Ireland Society for Higher Education. In her role in DCU, one area of responsibility is the delivery of services to the research community. As part of this role she talks to researchers about impact factors - their value, use and role in research assessment and review exercises. Her presentation today will look in detail at the well established ISI impact factor; discuss its origins, use and the well documented issues surrounding it. It will then focus on what the future might hold for this well established journal number!
