Research Strategy and Management in Universities
Document Type Book Chapter
in Jeroen Huisman and Attila Pausits (eds.), European Higher Education Management and Development. Compendium for Managers. Waxmann, Münster / New York / München / Berlin.
This chapter begins by highlighting theoretical and policy changes which have underpinned the transformation of university-based research from an individual pursuit to an academic enterprise which needs to be managed. It then discusses the role of research management and the research office. A case study of research management at the newly founded Medical University of Graz will provide a good example of how a university goes about defining a research strategy, setting priorities and meeting the challenges that arise.
