Temporalities and the Drawn Response to the Conservation and Restoration of Paintings.

This paper will consider the temporal implications for drawing in the light of conservation and restoration treatments to paintings by the Seventeenth Century Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer.

Using three critical frameworks: Norman Bryson’s becoming model for drawing and the relationship of liminality to a painting during conservation/restoration, George Didi Huberman’s anti-chronological reading of the detail and the pan in painting, and Walter Benjamin’s definitions of drawing the paper will seek to address some implications for a drawing practice that responds to a pre-existing museum artworks.

The paper will present some findings from my own drawing practice that responds to Vermeer’s The Love Letter (c. 1667-1670) and The Girl with the Red Hat (c.1665-67). It will make particular reference to the non-chronological sequencing and staging of the drawings as they consider the stages of conservation and restoration treatments of paintings.

For Culture Night 2011 West Cork Arts Centre presents Free-Fall, an exhibition of aerial photographs, photographic stop motion animations and an interactive audio visual work by Irish artist Amy Walsh.

Free-Fall consists of three inter-related bodies of work titled Saturday Swimmers, The New Gardeners and Small Stories. The work was produced in three very different locations – Newfoundland, Iceland and Ireland – documenting individuals carrying out similar mundane, routine activities in their own landscapes. What makes this exhibition exceptionally interesting is the photographic technique employed by the artist in most of the works. For the past year and a half Amy Walsh has been investigating and using the Kite Aerial Photography (KAP) technique, where a digital camera is attached to a kite and photographs are taken from a ‘bird’s eye’ view.

Benefits of Continuing Professional Development in the Visual Communications Sector in Ireland

This research is concerned with identifying the benefits of Continuous Professional Development for the Visual Communications sector in Ireland, with the aim of establishing what benefits exist for both the employee and employer. Research is undertaken to identify CPD programmes that currently exist in other industries in Ireland for the purpose of establishing commonalities and how this may apply to the Visual Communications sector. This is achieved through a combination of literature review, desk research, surveys of employees and employers in the Visual Communications sector and a number of semi-formal interviews with representatives from various industry sectors with established CPD programmes such as Design Ireland, Engineers Ireland and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland. The main points of the literature review include defining the term Visual Communications and elaborating on sectorial breakdown and comparing the Irish sector with international markets. The term Continuing Professional Development is also defined and existing CPD programmes in Ireland are identified and discussed in context of their relevance to the Visual Communications sector. Main issues regarding CPD are outlined, in terms of models of CPD, the benefits for industry and barriers that hinder participation. Government and Education policy on CPD is also investigated. The primary research data is gathered in the form of semi-formal interviews and surveys. Through careful analysis this information is used to validate the information and data uncovered from the literature review and offers a number of perspectives into the benefits of CPD in various industry sectors in Ireland. The main points regarding benefits to participation in CPD are outlined and recommendations are made for encouraging grater participation are made and the need for partnership between industry and education in developing a meaningful CPD programme is discussed.

Do You See What I Mean? Computer-Mediated Discourse Analysis

This chapter explores a sociolinguistic approach to computer-mediated communication (CMC), by examining how higher education teachers use digital media to manage interpersonal interaction in their online courses, form impressions, shape and maintain relationships with their students. Previous studies have often focused on the differences between online and offline interactions, though contemporary research is moving towards the view that CMC should be studied as an embedded linguistic form in everyday life. The study of language in these contexts is typically based on text-based forms of CMC, (often referred to as computer-mediated discourse analysis). Within this, focus in the chapter is on the devising and implementation of pragmatic linguistics of online interactions; at a high level this refers to meaning-making, shared belief systems and intercultural differences; at a specific level this includes issues such as turn-taking and the sequential analysis and organisation of virtual ‘interlocution’.

The Management and Creation of Knowledge: Do Wikis Help?

Wikis are frequently cited in Higher Education research as appropriate and powerful web spaces which provide opportunities to capture, discuss, and review individual, group, project or organisational activities. These activities, in turn, offer possibilities for knowledge development by utilising wiki collaborative active spaces. The chapter uses selected case studies examples to illustrate the use of wikis to support online community based tasks, project development/process, collaborative materials development and various student and peer supported activities. A key focus of the chapter centres on evaluating the effectiveness (or otherwise) of wikis to create online communities to support knowledge management (development, retention and transfer). See Choy & Ng (2007), Lamb (2004), Elgort (2008), Raman et al. (2005). By way of contextualising the studies, a variety of uses of wikis in higher education are reviewed as part of this chapter. See, for example, Lamb, (2004) Choy, & Ng, (2007), Doolan, (2006) Jones P. (2007) Raman, et al. (2005) Grierson, et al.,, (2004). Creation of knowledge sentence + refs? The chapter concludes with a review of the emergent themes arising and lessons learned from the case studies. This leads into a series of recommendations relating to the effective establishment, design, management and support and use of wikis to support knowledge creation and collaborative enterprise.
